The history behind the coast of Maine is always interesting to me. We live amongst so many amazing historical places, and often miss the importance within it all.
This weeks challenge, called me back to a place I have visited often, Spring Point Lighthouse, in South Portland. Here, there are Forts which allow for an amazing view of the Harbor and a historical vantage point that many of us never get to appreciate. Today, I photographed here and came upon this historical information to share. “On South Portland’s waterfront is Fort Preble, which is a military fort established in 1808 to protect Portland Harbor. It was in operation during several American conflicts, including the United States Civil War, World War I, and World War II. Near Fort Preble is Spring Point Ledge Light, which was constructed by the federal government in 1897 to mark a dangerous rock ledge” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Portland,_Maine).
These forts provided the perfect ‘through’ vision that I had in mind! Framing is certainly one way this challenge can be interpreted and met. I wanted to find a creative way to do so. Using the windows within the Forts at Spring Point Ledge, did just that.
Todays challenge made me appreciate all the different ways I have seen this Lighthouse photographed, and got me to thinking that I have never seen one such as this in print, though I am sure one or two exist somewhere!
